United States Mint Proof Set (Select Year)
United States Mint Proof Set (Select Year)
A United States Proof Set is a specially packaged collection of coins produced by the U.S. Mint using a high-quality minting process designed for collectors. Proof sets typically include one example of each circulating coin for a given year, struck in a highly polished and detailed finish.
Key Features:
Finish: Proof coins are known for their mirror-like backgrounds and frosted, detailed designs. They are made by striking specially prepared blanks multiple times with polished dies.
Packaging: Coins are sealed in a hard plastic lens (clear case) to protect the coins and preserve their quality, and they are usually accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
Contents: A standard modern proof set includes:
1-cent (penny)
5-cent (nickel)
10-cent (dime)
25-cent (quarter) – may include multiple quarters if part of special programs (like the 50 State Quarters, America the Beautiful, or American Women quarters)
50-cent (half dollar)
$1 coin – often included since the introduction of the Sacagawea and Presidential dollar series
Mint Mark: Most proof sets are struck at the San Francisco Mint and bear the “S” mint mark.
Purpose: Proof sets are intended strictly for collectors, not for circulation or investment. They showcase the best possible quality of U.S. coinage.
Types of U.S. Proof Sets:
Regular Proof Sets: Standard annual issues featuring circulating coinage.
Silver Proof Sets: Contain coins (typically dime, quarters, and half dollar) struck in 99.9% silver instead of clad compositions.
Limited Edition & Special Sets: May include unique finishes (like reverse proof or enhanced proof), special packaging, or commemorate events.
